Lithuania

Lithuania is part of the unique mixed forest belt, which means that of the about 28 % of country’s total land surface that is covered by forest the trees growing there vary from broadleaves and a mixture of conifers like pines, spruce’s, birches etc.

This allows for very dynamic landscape. Additionally there is the fact that a lot of forests areas have remained unexploited for many years combined with the current incentive of “wild” forest where forests regions are largely allowed to grow and regenerate themselves instead of being managed as commercial forests. The result of which has led to forest sections dating from middle-ages scattered by new forest growth in between.

Neringa

Our first destination during our trip to Lithuania is Neringa, which is located on the UNESCO World Heritage listed Curonian Spit. It is a small town located in the centre of this protected natural and cultural wonder of Lithuania. With ever shifting dunes and lush pine forest standing tall and defiant on the little strip of land that forms a natural bay for the Lithuanian side and acts a s a barrier to the Baltic sea, a safe water front for the small fishing vessels of the locals. It is also home to the great heron colony, the pre-historic treasure of Lithuania-amber and the legend of the witches.

Mindunai

Our second stop is the area of Mindunai, which is located in one of the most densely forested areas of Lithuania. Located on the edge of the Labanoras regional park and its lake region it is one of the most beautiful nature rich areas in Lithuania. One of the most interesting sites in the area is that of the Labanoras regional park tower where you can climb to the top of  this spiral structured tower to get a birds eye view of the forest around you.

Vilnius

Our third and final destination during this trip is Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.

Vilnius is a one of a kind city, as can clearly be seen by visiting the old town area where you will find the Gediminas Castle tower on the hill looking down on the stately Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania while spying the new modern Vilnius on the horizon. From the beautiful Vingis Park to the weird and wonderful Museum of illusions to the unique fascinating district known as the Republic of Užupis, Vilnius is a rich and vibrant city full of history, culture and stories to tell.
